Light sensors for more safety in public spaces

Screen Experts GmbH has developed a new light sensor technology that promisingly simplifies the use of LED screens in highly sensitive areas, such as road traffic.

The new development was first presented at the ISE in Barcelona in January 2023. The response was overwhelming nationally and internationally.

With its own development and programming, Screen-Experts GmbH has developed a milestone for the use of LED screens in all lighting conditions. Everywhere, where a fast fading down and fading up is necessary by changing light conditions, a LED screen can supply constant picture quality with the new light sensor technology. Disturbing glare is thus eliminated.

The new solution from Screen Experts GmbH includes a controller and a corresponding light sensor. The controller can be equipped with up to four sensors, currently unique on the market. The up to four sensors measure the ambient brightness from 0-64000 lux in 1 lux steps. According to the programming, the controller regulates the brightness of the LED screen quite automatically much finer than commercially available products. Thus, the optimal brightness is achieved at any time and in any lighting conditions.

The controller has a road traffic mode that is specially designed for use in road traffic. It offers particularly fast response times between LED screen and brightness measurement.

If the ambient brightness darkens briefly (for example, daylight is obscured by clouds), it is now possible to fade out quickly in milliseconds and then slowly fade back in. This eliminates rapid fading and glare. This is particularly relevant in road traffic. Here, it is not only a question of image quality, but also of safety. For this reason in particular, approval authorities pay special attention to this aspect when granting permits for an LED wall in road traffic. Screen Experts has developed this technology to offer the authorities more safety and thus make approval processes more successful.

The new technology is being used for the first time in Celle. There, it was installed in an LED screen hanging at a traffic intersection. Operating approval was granted only on the basis of dimming safety.
